🧵 India's Handicrafts Are Dying — And We Must Not Stay Silent

India has always been known as the land of skilled hands, from the blue pottery of Jaipur, the Chikankari of Lucknow, to the weaves of Kanchipuram and Banaras, to Zari-Zardozi of Bhopal.  Each handcrafted piece is more than a product — it’s a living story, a piece of our collective cultural identity.

But today, that legacy is under threat.

The Hidden Struggle of Our Artisans

Behind the beauty of every handcrafted item is a struggling artisan. A woman sitting in a rural corner of India with generations of wisdom in her hands — but no market, no recognition, and no consistent income.

The reality is heartbreaking:

- Many traditional artisans earn less than minimum wage.

- Young generations are abandoning crafts to find other work, not because they want to, but because they have to.

- Entire art forms are vanishing as they fail to compete with cheap, factory-made replicas.

Why Should We Care?

Because this is our heritage. These crafts carry the soul of India, rooted in sustainability, culture, and community. They are eco-friendly, ethical, and soulful — the exact opposite of fast, soulless production.

By losing our artisans, we’re not just losing jobs — we’re losing languages, histories, and identities.

]Coop Craft's Mission

At Coop Craft, we are not just celebrating Indian handicrafts — we are fighting for their survival. We work directly with artisan communities to:

- Provide fair wages and dignified livelihoods

- Promote traditional techniques through modern design sensibility

- Create global awareness about the value of handmade in today’s world

But this is not a one-brand mission. It requires all of us.

 What Can You Do?

- Buy less, but buy handmade.

- Choose crafts over trends, tradition over mass production.

- Share artisan stories, tag brands that work with them, and help shift the narrative.

- Support policies and platforms that put artisans first.

Every time you choose handcrafted, you are preserving a legacy, a family, and a future.

The Time to Act Is Now

Let’s not wait until our crafts are only found in museums. Let’s honour the hands that shape our culture — and keep their stories alive.

✨Support local. Support handmade. Support India.
